RDSD reports on Punta Tenement status

Thirty-four percent (34%) or 245 occupant families remain to be original owners while 59% or 426 are new occupants from the original 720 dwelling units in Punta Tenement, Sta. Ana, Manila, reports the Mapping and Census validation conducted by Resettlement and Development Services Department (RDSD) last March 21-April 30, 2011.

In the census validation conducted, 49 dwellers or 7% could not be categorized in terms of their tenurial status as the occupants were not present during the validation. Also in the 2011 Mapping and Census validation, there are 1,089 listed households (listed and interviewed – 806; listed but not interviewed – 283) and 732 housing units mapped.

Punta Tenement consisting of two (2) seven-storey buildings and constructed in 1963 has 672 original residential units and 48 non-residential including commercial spaces.

It was in the sixties when the government initiated the construction of the multi-storey tenement housing projects like the Punta Tenement in Manila, especially for low-income families in informal settlements. In additional report, families in blighted areas in Metro Manila were relocated to various multi-storey tenement housing projects. The first tenement built was the Bagong Barangay Housing Project (BBHP) or Project 5 in Pandacan (1953), Vitas Tenement along Estero de Vitas, Tondo, Manila (1962) and Fort Bonifacio Tenement (1973) in Taguig.

Mapping and census validation are being conducted consistent with the relocation and resettlement process according to the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Urban Development and Housing Act (UDHA) of 1992 and at the same time to determine present number and names of occupants of the buildings and identify appropriate housing interventions.
